Pakistan has proposed hosting a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in December to respond to the humanitarian crisis affecting Afghanistan, Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmoud Qureshi has said.
The United Nations has warned that Afghanistan is on the brink of one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, and Qureshi said the OIC should “get involved to help our Afghan brothers.”
The initiative belongs to Saudi Arabia and Pakistan has proposed to host the summit on December 17, the minister said in a statement issued Monday.
“We must step up our joint efforts to reduce the humanitarian needs of the Afghan people,” he said.
The OIC has 57 member states and could be the most important international conference on Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in mid-August.
Since then, the Afghan economy, which is heavily dependent on international donations, has collapsed. Washington has frozen the assets of the Afghan Central Bank and the World Bank, as well as the International Monetary Fund, have suspended aid to Kabul.
The United Nations has warned that 23 million Afghans, out of a total population of 38 million, will face famine this winter.
The international community is looking for mechanisms to provide immediate assistance to Afghans by bypassing the Taliban government, which no country has recognized.
