More than 1,000 people have lost their lives in Pakistan due to flooding caused by monsoon rains, according to a new tally released by Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In the last 24 hours, 119 people lost their lives, bringing the total number of dead to 1,033, while torrential rains continue today in some parts of the country.
More than 33 million people, i.e. one in seven inhabitants of Pakistan, have also been seriously affected by the floods and almost one million homes have been destroyed or severely damagedaccording to the Pakistani government.
The NDMA noted that more than 800,000 acres of arable land were destroyed, as were more than 3,400 kilometers of the country’s road network, while 149 bridges were washed away.
The monsoons, which usually last from June to September, are important for irrigating crops and replenishing water reimgs in the Indian subcontinent. But every year they also cause disasters and tragedies.
