Palermo, opens BarConi, the ice cream shop run by migrants

A special ice cream parlor, which will be run by migrant men and women from Central Africa and the Maghreb. In Palermo, tomorrow at 6 pm, it will be inaugurated BarConsthe latest initiative put in place by Moltivolti, a social enterprise in the heart of Ballarò, which has already opened the well-known restaurant of the same name.

«The will is to offer a response and concrete support to many young migrants“, Moltivolti informs us,” blackmailed by increasingly stringent rules and decrees that look to the employment contract as the only tool to live in a country other than the one of origin, and also outline more sustainable business and development models that take into account consideration of fairer, more supportive and fairer job prospects “. A difficult bet, starting from the name itself, which “aims to re-semantise an element of negativity to charge it with positive values”.

BarConi, moreover, there is a special corner of Ballarò: small Mediterranean squarewhich is a place that the neighborhood community has rescued from neglect, cleaning it of garbage and debris and keeping it alive with the opening of new craft shops.

In the first phase of the project, it will be the master Antonio Cappadonia (one of the best known ice cream masters in Italy) to supply BarConi the final product and skills for the sale and preparation of ice cream. Then the staff at work will manage the ice cream shop exclusively. The ice cream parlor will also serve sweets, cakes and leavened products for breakfast produced by the Moltivolti staff.

The Cappadonia master also has created a special taste, dedicated to the opening of BarConi: lightly salted peanut butter ice cream with a variegation of puffed rice sandblasted with brown sugar and enriched by the scent of lemon zest. «This taste is inspired by our restaurant: we chose peanut butter because it is a much loved condiment by the Ballarò community», explains Antonio Campo, Moltivolti chef, «as well as a fundamental ingredient for the preparation of many African recipes. We added rice because it is a cereal that unites all food cultures of the world, while lemon brings us back to the scents of our land: the Mediterranean ».
