Ready to help refugees fleeing the bombings that are destroying Ukraine, to provide accommodation, even at home, hot meals and new opportunities. But – of course – only if the people in question are white. If they are black, even if they are fleeing the same war, never mind: let them make do.
That lady from Palermo must have thought that he had decided to open the doors of his second home to two college students escaped from Ukraine and who, when he discovered that the boys in question were of Nigerian descent, immediately changed his mind. Michael and Meshack, who studied Economics and Medicine in Kiev, they had to look for another accommodation.
He told it to the Corriere della Sera Sister Anna Alonzo, who welcomed them in Palermo. “She told me she didn’t want to host two Africans. Two white refugees were fine, blacks were not“. The nun welcomed them for a few days in the “Casa Regina della Pace” in Casteldaccia, a center to help Nigerian girls removed from prostitution.
Now Michael and Meshack, as the news agency reported Nevhave finally found a place more suitable for them, where to stay: it is the La Noce center in Palermo, a structure managed by the Waldensian Diaconia that welcomes migrants, women and vulnerable people. “When they arrived they needed a rest,” the director Anna Ponente explained to Repubblica. “They were tired and bewildered. Now they are starting to familiarize themselves with social housing workers and to get to know the neighborhood. They have already started studying Italian and are in contact with a legal team which will be able to help them from a documentary point of view “.
In La Noce, the two boys met other students, and will be able to resume their studies. “Further on, if they wish, they will be able to face a psychological path with our operators in order to express themselves on what they have experienced, on the rejection they have suffered», Adds the director. “For the moment I can say that I see in them a great determination in wanting to continue studying”.
Journalists, however, have documented many other cases such as that of Michael and Meshack. “While white women and children were given priority over vehicles leaving the country, African women were denied access to trains departing from Kiev even if the seats were empty, ”McGill University experts write. “These incidents demonstrate a racist logic that places some people as vulnerable and others as being outside the circle of the moral obligation to receive protection. Black and non-white people, it seems, are not that deserving of treatment. ‘
In the past three months, Canada has welcomed as many Ukrainian refugees as all Afghan refugees hosted in the past year. European countries that had opposed the reception of non-white refugees now feel compelled to provide refuge for Ukrainians. The racial boundary is so ingrained that, “even when it is pointed out, it is difficult for many to avoid it.”
