Palestinian Authority appeals for support from Arab countries

The Palestinian government has not received the financial support it expected from international and regional partners, said the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, during the Arab League Congress this Thursday (16).

“Now, it is essential that we are able to activate our security network in Arab countries, increasing the resilience of our people and allowing the Palestinian government to fulfill its functions,” said Abbas.

Funding for the Palestinian Authority, which is the body that exercises limited governance in the West Bank, has suffered from a major cut in revenue due to a dispute over the transfer of resources collected by Israel on behalf of the Palestinians.

Funding from international donors has also been reduced. Grants formed 30% of the Authority's $6 billion annual budget. Now, the transfers make up about 1% of government revenue, said Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh.
