Palestinian Authority supports ceasefire resolution approved by the Security Council

The spokesman for the Presidency of the Palestinian Authority, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said this Monday (10) that he supports any resolution that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and preserves the unity of the Palestinian territory.

Abu Rudeineh’s comments come after the UN Security Council approved a US resolution supporting a plan to end fighting in Gaza.

Hamas also welcomed the approval of the resolution. The armed group said it is ready to cooperate with mediators in implementing the plan’s principles.

An important negotiator in the attempt to reach an agreement, Egypt also welcomed the Council’s measure, according to a statement from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

US Resolution approved in Council

This Monday (10), the UN Security Council approved a resolution proposed by the United States on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. There were 14 votes in favor and one abstention from Russia.

The USA finalized the document on Sunday (9) after six days of negotiations between the members. Joe Biden presented a three-phase ceasefire plan on May 31, which he described as an Israeli initiative.

Some Security Council members questioned whether Israel had accepted the plan to end fighting in Gaza.

The resolution welcomes the new ceasefire proposal, “which Israel has accepted, calls on Hamas to also accept it, and urges both parties to fully implement its terms without delay and without conditions.”

“We are waiting for Hamas to agree to the ceasefire agreement that it claims to want,” US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the council before the vote.

“With each passing day, unnecessary suffering continues,” he added.

The resolution also details the proposal and clarifies that “if negotiations take more than six weeks to phase one, the ceasefire will continue as long as negotiations continue.”
