Palestinian Khalida Jarar of the Popular Front released after two years in Israeli prison

Halinda Jarar, one of the most famous figures of the Popular Front for its Liberation Palestine (PFLP), was released yesterday after serving a two-year sentence in an Israeli prison.

Ms. Jarar, 58, was arrested in October 2019 by Israeli forces at her home in Ramallah, where the Palestinian Authority is based in the occupied West Bank, during a large-scale operation targeting various Palestinian figures.

The operation led to the death of a 17-year-old Israeli woman in an attack in the West Bank that the Israeli army attributed to the PFLP, a Marxist movement described as a “terrorist” organization by the Israel, the US and the EU.

Khalida Jarar, who was charged with involvement in the PFLP, was sentenced in March to two years in prison by an Israeli military court after pleading guilty. Given the period she had already spent in detention, the release of the Palestinian MP was expected these days.

After her release, she went to the cemetery where her daughter is buried

After being released from prison after heading to Ramallah, an Israeli-occupied Palestinian territory, Ms. Jarar went to the cemetery where her daughter, Suha, a Palestinian activist who died suddenly in July at the age of 31, is buried. French Agency photographer.

After the death of her daughter, Palestinian NGOs had asked the Israeli authorities to give permission, to temporarily release Khalida Jarar, to attend the funeral. The request was rejected.

In a press release, the PFLP welcomed the release of the politician, whom she described as “a fighting comrade who embodies the best example of patience and courage”.

Many PFLP executives are being held in Israeli jails. Halinda Jarar has been imprisoned repeatedly.

Arrested by the Israeli army in July 2017, he was placed under administrative detention for 20 months – a measure that allows the Israeli authorities to imprison persons for months, and is renewable without time limit, without the need to explain the reasons.
