Palestinian killed by Israeli forces in occupied West Bank

Israeli troops have shot and killed a Palestinian man trying to cross the Israeli security fence from the occupied West Bank, officials said today.

The Israeli army said soldiers had spotted a suspect near the city of Kalkilia destroying a security fence and trying to cross into Israel. The soldiers opened fire, he said, adding that an investigation was under way.

Israel built the fence along the border with the West Bank at the height of a Palestinian uprising as a way to stop suicide bombers from entering the country. The Palestinians call it a “land grab”.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said today that the incident was “an execution on the spot”.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the deceased is Nabil Ghanem, a 53-year-old worker from the city of Nablus in the northern part of the West Bank.

Every day, about 165,000 Palestinians enter Israel with permits to work, according to the Palestinian union, but every week thousands more cross illegally, often avoiding checkpoints through gaps in the security fence.
