Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today greeted agreement madewith the mediation of foreign countries, between Israel and Hamas for the release of 50 hostages held by the Palestinian movement and the declaration of a four-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, while calling for more permanent solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Abbas’ government, based in the occupied West Bank, “appreciates the (mediation) efforts of Qatar and Egypt”, wants a prolonged truce with Israel and “the implementation of a political solution based on international legitimacy,” according to a social media post by Hussein al-Sheikh, a senior adviser to the Palestinian president.
Germany today hailed “progress” that “should be used to provide vital aid to civilians” in the Gaza Strip, following an agreement to declare a humanitarian ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave in exchange for the release of 50 Hamas hostages .
“Releasing a first group of hostages is progress, although nothing in the world will be able to erase their suffering. The humanitarian truce must be used to provide vital, necessary aid to the people of Gaza,” German Foreign Minister Analena Burbock said in H.
For his part, her British counterpart David Cameron welcomed “a crucial step” for the hostages and “dealing with the humanitarian crisis”.
“This agreement is a critical step towards providing relief to the families of the hostages and addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza,” Cameron said.
“I call on all sides to ensure that the agreement is fully implemented,” he added.
