Palestinian prisoner in Israel Hisham Abu Hawa goes on hunger strike after 141 days

The Palestinian prisoner Hisham Abu Howas ended on Tuesday night (04/01), after 141 days, his hunger strike in protest of his administrative detention by the authorities Israel, after an agreement was reached allowing his release at the end of February, his lawyer confirmed to French Agency.

“He agreed to end his hunger strike. “He drank tea ten minutes ago and everything is going well”, said the lawyer late on Tuesday night (04/01) Jawad Bullos, who visited him at the Israeli hospital where he is being treated as a guard.

The agreement reached by Palestinian and Israeli officials stipulates that Mr. Abu Hawass will be released on February 26, the day his current six-month administrative detention expires, which will not be renewed, he explained. THE Mr. Abu Hawass, 40 years old, who is believed to be a member of the organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad and Israeli authorities suspected of links to attacks on the Jewish state, went on a hunger strike in August to protest his uncondemned imprisonment or trial since October 2020.

The father of five, with a bony face covering a thick beard, was in administrative detention, a measure that allows Israeli authorities to imprison anyone without charge for a six-month renewable period.

At the weekend, doctors who visited him said he was in “critical condition”, while the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) expressed “concern about the irreparable damage to his health and his possible tragic death”.

“His condition is very dangerous (…) he can no longer speak and is not aware of what is happening around him. “Even if he ends his hunger strike, he will have serious health problems,” he said on Sunday. French Agency the Aisa Chrebat, his wife Mr. Abu Hawass.

THE Palestinian Authority, located in the occupied West Bank, demanded his “immediate” release, while the Islamist movements Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad threatened it Israel that they would retaliate if he died in prison.

According to Association of Palestinian Prisoners, a civil society organization defending detainees from the occupied territories Israel, this hunger strike was one of the longest it has ever done Palestinian.
