A Palestinian teenager was killed Wednesday (May 5th) in the northern occupied West Bank by live ammunition from the Israeli army, the Palestinian health ministry reported. Said Youssef Muhammad Oudeh, 16, “died of serious wounds caused by live ammunition” fired by the Israeli army in the town of Odla, near Nablus, the Palestinian health ministry said.
The Palestinian Red Crescent has confirmed that it recovered the young man’s body and indicated that another young man, injured by gunfire, had been hospitalized. Asked by Agence France-Presse, the Israeli army said that Molotov cocktails had been thrown at soldiers “during a routine operation” south of Nablus. “The soldiers acted to stop the suspects by opening fire in their direction,” the army told Agence France-Presse, specifying that no soldier had been injured and that the incident would be examined.
A manhunt in progress
The Israeli military carried out a massive manhunt in the northern West Bank in search of the Palestinian who shot Israelis on Sunday. He fled after opening fire at a bus station at the Tapuah junction, south of Nablus. Identified as Montasser Shalabi, 44, he was finally arrested Wednesday in the village of Silwad near Ramallah, Israeli security forces said, adding that he did not belong “to a terrorist organization”. According to local Palestinian sources, Montasser Shalabi also holds US citizenship.
The Israeli military has occupied the West Bank, a Palestinian territory, since 1967. About 2.8 million Palestinians live in this territory, as do some 475,000 Israelis living in settlements deemed illegal by international law.
