A group of men in southern Gaza intercepted trucks carrying humanitarian aid coming from a newly built floating pier on Saturday (18), taking boxes of food in a dramatic display of desperation.
The video of CNN it showed the men running alongside the trucks and jumping into the back of the vehicles while they were still moving, reaching aid boxes secured under tarps. When the trucks stopped, large groups formed along the road.
Ramadan Al-Aklok, a local resident who took a box of cookies from a truck, said, “They brought these,” pointing to the box, “as help for people. The trucks were moving, and the men jumped on them because of widespread hunger.”
One of the men interviewed by CNN expressed deep skepticism about the intentions behind the floating pier, which was built by the U.S. military. He questioned whether the aid was truly intended to help the Palestinian people or had “ulterior motives.”
“They say it’s to help, but people are apprehensive. Is this help or something else? We know that the US has never supported the Palestinian cause, so it is implausible that they are giving us aid without something in return,” Gaza resident Mounir Ayad told CNN.
This sentiment was echoed by other Palestinians, who questioned why aid could not be transported through existing land crossings, which they believe would effectively end the famine in Gaza if opened.
Numerous United Nations agencies have warned that aid from the docks will not be enough to tackle a spiraling hunger crisis, while Israel still heavily restricts the most efficient deliveries via land crossing.
