Thousands of protesters took to the streets again on Tuesday in Panama, where anger and mobilization are simmering and many are demanding that the Central American country’s government take action to combat soaring inflation and endemic corruption.
Hundreds of people also demonstrated the day before Monday, prompting President Laurentino Cortisso, after two weeks of protests, to announce a reduction or freeze in the prices of fuel and about ten basic products.
“The situation in Panama is unlivable,” said a student who participated in the mobilization.
Demonstrations took place throughout the country, in addition to the capital, despite the announcements made by Mr. Cortisso the previous day.
The head of state assured that the price of a gallon (of 3.78 liters) of fuel will now be reduced to “3.95 (US dollars) for private cars across the country from July 15”, a measure that already affects public use vehicles and public transport from May.
The price of fuel increased by 47% from January to July in Panama.
