The Covid-19 pandemic caused a sharp drop in investment in the eurozone that was followed by a major recovery. This is the analysis of a report by the European Central Bank (ECB) released this Wednesday (3).
Risks to investment prospects have increased with Russia’s war in Ukraine. However, the pandemic has accelerated the ongoing process of structural transformation in the eurozone economy, highlighting the benefits of digital and green investment, says the study.
According to the report, business in the region plummeted with the outbreak, causing problems in companies’ working capital and delay in strategic planning from the first half of 2020.
This scenario, however, was reversed with the adoption of a strict monetary and fiscal policy that avoided an even bigger crisis and is close to its pre-pandemic level.
Also according to the ECB’s note, investments on the European continent faced several obstacles related to supply bottlenecks, rising energy costs and great uncertainty in the future.
