Pandemic damages literacy in Brazil and puts pressure on public schools

In the week marked by the return of face-to-face classes in much of the country, a study pointed out that the number of Brazilian children aged six and seven who cannot read and write grew 66.3% from 2019 to 2021. The survey shows that 2, 4 million or 40% of children in Brazil were not literate in this age group.

At the same time, the economic effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have led many families to withdraw their children from private schools and seek places in the public network. And a consequence of this has been the difficulties of municipal and state governments in meeting this new demand.
