The number of officially registered cases of the new coronavirus in Africa reached 9,259,813 yesterday Wednesday afternoon, announced the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of Africa (ACDC).
According to data collected by the ACDC, the public health service of the African Union, the death toll from the pandemic across the continent has reached 226,536 dead.
In other words, Africa accounts for 3.3% of cases and 4.3% of deaths officially recorded since the pandemic.
The countries with the highest numbers of confirmed infections continue to be South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Ethiopia, always according to the data collected by the agency.
In terms of the total number of cases, the southern sector of Africa – where the Omicron variant was identified, which has triggered a series of travel bans and measures – is the one hardest hit, followed by the north and east. The central part of the continent, according to official figures, is the one that is least affected to date.
