The State Department of Transit of Goiás (Detran-GO) carried out tests with breathalyzer which indicated the presence of alcohol in the mouth after consuming panettone. The humorous demonstration was published this Monday (16). Watch the video .
The traffic inspection body aimed to alert the population about the risks of combining alcohol and driving, especially after 18 deaths were recorded in the state, many of them associated with drunk drivers.
The test with panettone, similar to that previously carried out with bread, proved that the sugar present in the food can generate alcohol in the mouth, resulting in a positive breathalyzer test.
THE DMV -GO clarifies that this alcohol is oral and does not reach the lungs. Although the panettone test may indicate sufficient alcohol content to generate penalties such as suspension of National Driving License (CNH) fine and even imprisonment, Detran-GO reinforces that the objective of the demonstration is educational.
“This demonstration was carried out just to show citizens and warn them of the danger of combining alcohol and driving” says Waldir Soares de Oliveira, president of Detran-GO.
The action aims to raise awareness among the population and traffic agents about the importance of safety in the transit .
Why is there alcohol in bread?
Bread making involves the formation of ethyl alcohol, which usually evaporates in the oven. The levels found in the analysis occur because industries dilute preservatives in the substance to prevent mold and guarantee the integrity of the bread, argues the entity.
“Although Brazilian legislation allows the use of some substances in food, some standards need to be revised to ensure that residual ethanol does not cause problems for consumers”, highlights Henrique Lian, executive director of Proteste.
Proteste sent a letter with the test results to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) and the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
The specialist suggests a maximum percentage of alcohol (for example, 0.5% according to the indicators presented in the report) and the scheduling of inspection actions regarding the levels of anti-mold preservative agents and the alcohol content, after regulation.
