Papa Francisco: Leonardo DiCaprio recalls a meeting on climate crisis

Actor and activist Leonardo Dicaprio, 50, used his social networks to honor Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88, due to a stroke followed by heart failure. The pontiff, whose baptism name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, died on Monday (21), after facing serious health problems in recent weeks, including bilateral pneumonia and a bronchitis.

The Hollywood star described the leader of the Catholic Church as an influential figure in the spiritual field and also in the environmental struggle – a cause that both shared.

“Papa Francisco was a revolutionary leader, not only for the Catholic Church, but also for environmental reform and activism. He demonstrated a profound and unshakable commitment to the care of the environment, especially through his innovative encyclical Laudato Si ‘, this powerful document served as an urgent appeal for an indispensable change in the way we relate to the planet. Francis has summoned individuals, communities, institutions, and world leaders to come together to care for our common home. His words helped boost the moment preceding the COP21 conference in 2015, contributing to the formation of the Paris Agreement. ”

The American artist also recalled a personal meeting with the Pontiff, shortly before launching his documentary about climate change, “Before the Flood” in 2016.

“During the filming of my documentary Before The Flood in 2016, I had the honor of sitting with Pope Francis for a conversation about the urgent need to face climate change. This experience was enlightening, deeply moving and exciting.”

In his honor, DiCaprio praised the continuity of the Pope’s work on the environmental agenda, years after the publication of Laudato Si ‘. In 2023, Francisco launched Laudate Deum: Apostolic Exhortation on the Climate Crisis, where he stated that “the signs of climate change are there, increasingly evident.”

“In it, he renewed his appeal for immediate and decisive climate actions, reminding us that ‘we are part of nature, included in it, and therefore, in constant interaction with it’, and that we should not see the world out, but from within. Pope Francis was one of the most extraordinary spiritual leaders of our time. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of environmentalists around the world.”
