Pope Francis’ pontificate has been marked by surprises and significant advances, according to theology professor Rosana Manzini. In an interview with CNN Brazil the expert shared her reflections on the impact of the current leader of the Catholic Church.
Manzini stressed that, unlike initial expectations, Francisco surprised the world with his actions and positions. “We waited for a Francis when he was elected? No. We imagined a Francisco? I also believe in the action of the Spirit of God in this,” said the theologian.
The teacher pointed out that, despite facing resistance, the Pope managed to advance in several important points. She emphasized Francis’ love not only for the Catholic Church, but for all humanity.
Manzini also stressed the pontiff’s connection with young people: “He goes against the yearning of this youth that does not accept a world of death, a youth that wants life.”
According to her, this approach has been fundamental to the broad support that Francis received, not only within the Catholic Church, but around the world.
The Legacy of Francis and the Future of the Church
Asked about the possibility of a future Pope being unable to support the changes promoted by Francisco, Manzini was optimistic: “Why do we think we can’t advance a next Pope? I think we anticipate what is hard to say.”
The theologian emphasized the importance of respecting the current moment, noting that it is still early for speculation about the next pontificate: “Francis has not been buried yet, his funerals have not even begun.”
She believes that the love and impact left by Francis will be remembered and will influence the future of the Church: “This pope who loved a lot and was not only Catholic, both beloved, he will be remembered at this right time.”
Manzini concluded by expressing his confidence in the future of the Catholic Church: “In this moment of fighting we pray and pray for the church he loved and what he will be, he will follow his footsteps, I’m sure of that.”
