There are two types of stroke: o hemorrhagic characterized by the break of a brain vessel, causing bleeding, and the ischemic which occurs when there is obstruction of an artery, preventing oxygen passage to brain cells. Ischemic stroke is the most common, representing 85% of all cases.

THE Stroke can be fatal when not treated quickly . Also, although less common, the hemorrhagic type is the most dangerous and which is the highest risk to life.

In an article previously published in the CNN neurologist Eli Faria Evaristo of the DFV Neuro Clinic and the Brazilian Stroke Society, pointed out that the rapid identification of symptoms and emergency care significantly reduces the risk of death.

For this, there are methods like “Samu”, which consists of four simple steps:

  • Smile (to evaluate if there is movement failure);
  • Embrace (to check the arm movement and if there is weakness);
  • Music (to see if the person can speak complete lyrics in a normal way);
  • Urgency (if any of the previous three, seek medical attention).

Stroke symptoms include mental confusion, speech or understanding change, vision change (in one or both eyes), intense sudden headache, balance change, coordination, dizziness or floor change, weakness or tingling on one side of the body.

Stroke risk factors include hypertension, overweight, excessive alcohol use, obesity, type 2 diabetes, advanced age, family history, high cholesterol, smoking and physical inactivity.

According to Evaristo, treatments have better results when applied in the early hours of stroke.
