A woman was hospitalized in serious condition in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia, after complications resulting from cosmetic surgery performed by a biomedical doctor. The procedure she underwent is called “jowl lipo”. The name of the professional was not disclosed.
The complaint was registered with the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Bahia (Cremeb) on Monday (14). The body is now preparing to sue the Public Prosecutor’s Office to hold the professional responsible for serious bodily injury and illegal practice of medicine.
According to Cremeb, the patient sought biomedicine to undergo liposuction in the submental region, known as the double chin. During the procedure, the professional made an incision in the woman’s neck, which caused damage to blood vessels and compromised the patient’s breathing.
After surgery, she was taken to a local hospital and admitted in serious condition. THE CNN the council reported that the woman was discharged last Monday.
After the incident, Cremeb carried out an inspection visit to the hospital to collect information from the patient’s medical records. The council is preparing a complaint to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which could include accusations of illegal practice of medicine, misrepresentation and serious bodily injury.
In a statement, Cremeb highlighted that it expects the biomedic to face severe legal consequences, including the possibility of imprisonment. “Unfortunately, this is not the first case that has occurred in Bahia, nor in Brazil, of non-medical professionals carrying out medical procedures in inappropriate places, without the capacity to deal with complications,” lamented the organization in a note.
