Former Prime Minister George Papandreou, a candidate for the leadership of the Movement for Change, harshly commented on the agreement of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan to sell military equipment and build warships to the Turkish Navy.
Mr Papandreou, in a statement, posed the following questions: “How is it possible for EU Member States to export not only weapons systems but also technology to a country that threatens the security of other Member States? Is there a common position to prevent the export of military technology and equipment that can be used for internal repression, international aggression or to contribute to regional destabilization?
George Papandreou points out that the recent agreement on the export of weapons systems between Spain and Turkey highlights a broader problem that needs to be solved at European level.
Thus, he argues, “faster and more decisive steps are needed to build a common European foreign policy and defense, with the compass of peace, democracy, the cooperation of peoples and respect for man and his rights. Before it is too late.”
