The attack in Highland Park, Illinois, in the United States, is the 308th mass shooting in the country this year, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit organization that tracks such incidents.

The institution defines a “mass shooting” as one that has four or more people shot, not counting the shooter.

There were 11 mass shootings in the first four days of July, with three on July 4th. They took place in Richmond, Virginia; Chicago and Highland Park, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

Other high-profile shootings include an 18-year-old boy in a New York supermarket, who killed 10 people, and an 18-year-old boy at a Texas school, which left 19 students and two teachers dead.

In the wake of those massacres, President Biden signed the first major federal gun safety legislation in decades nine days ago, marking a significant bipartisan breakthrough on one of Washington’s most contentious political issues.

Illinois attack leaves dead and injured

A shooting during a US Independence Day parade in a suburb outside Chicago, Illinois, left at least six people dead on Monday. The search for the shooter continues, according to authorities.

A total of 31 people were transported to two hospitals, NorthShore University Health System spokesman Jim Anthony said. The vast majority had gunshot wounds, while others were injured while fleeing, he added.

According to Jennifer Banek, a Lake County coroner, five fatalities died at the scene and were adults. The sixth victim died in hospital, but Banek had no information on his age.

“There was one who was transported to a local hospital who also died in the hospital. I don’t have any additional information about this victim,” she said.

The attack in the city of Highland Park, about 40 kilometers north of Chicago, began shortly after 10 am local time as residents watched a Fourth of July parade along Central Avenue.
