In the arrest of Pagio Koumbas, who took third place in the presidential elections held last week in Paraguaythe country’s authorities proceeded on Friday.
Koumbas led protests, challenging them election results and claiming a recountalthough international organizations said there was no reason to question the integrity of the process.
The 61-year-old Kumba accused of “disturbing the peace” and other crimes, according to the arrest warrant issued earlier. The head of the “National Crusade” party surprised many with the percentage he secured (almost 23%), taking third place, behind the president-elect Santiago Peña (42%) and Efrain Alegre (27%).
He was arrested hours before his arrival in the capital Asuncionwhere he was expected to mobilize his followers in new demonstrations.
“As you can see, I’m being arrested”Koumbas said in a video posted on social media. “All criminals in this country should be handcuffed, like Pagio Koumbas” he commented, before driving away in a patrol car.
