A Paraguayan anti-trafficking prosecutor has been killed in Colombia on a Caribbean island where he was spending his honeymoon, the Colombian police chief announced today from Bogota.
Five Colombian special investigators have arrived on the island of Barrow, where the murder was committed, to undertake investigations with the help of Paraguay and the United States, General Jorge Luis Vargas told reporters.
The general did not specify when Marcelo Peci was killed or the exact circumstances of the crime. Petzi married Colombian journalist Claudia Aguilera in Cartagena on April 30 and posted photos of his wedding on his Twitter account. The newlyweds were spending their honeymoon on Baru Island.
Paraguayan President Mario Abdo Benitez has condemned the “brutal murder” of a prosecutor who “plunged the whole nation into mourning”.
“We strongly condemn this tragedy and will redouble our efforts in the fight against organized crime,” he added.
A group of Paraguayan police officers will travel to Colombia to take part in the investigation, said General Vargas.
