Paraguayan government delivers supposed spying information to the country’s MP

Paraguay Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano handed on on Tuesday (8) information about the alleged spying of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) to his country to the prosecutor of Paraguay, Irma Llano.

According to the Paraguayan government, the chancellor handed information about the case to the agent responsible for the investigation, which began last Wednesday (3) by the unit specialized in computer crimes.

According to the Paraguayan Public Prosecution Service, the intelligence action that would have been promoted ABIN to obtain confidential information regarding the negotiation of Itaipu tariffs may constitute an improper access to data, computer and data interception systems.

The investigation will seek to determine ABIN’s direct or indirect participation in intrusion actions and in the planning of international spy operations to senators, deputies, members of the Diplomatic Corps and the Paraguayan National Electricity Administration, among others.

Sources linked to the case said CNN that the investigation is already carried out, but is still in an incipient stage.

Also attending the meeting with the prosecutor the deputy minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Victor Verdún, who last week handed a letter from the Paraguayan government to the Brazilian ambassador in Asuncion, José Antonio Marcondes, requesting information about the alleged spy.

The Paraguayan ambassador in Brasilia, Juan Ángel Delgadillo, who was summoned back to his country for consultations, was also present.

The supposed spy, which surfaced after a report from the UOL portal, generated a diplomatic crisis between countries. Paraguay considered the intelligence action as an intrusion in its internal affairs, and suspended the negotiations of Annex C of the Itaipu Treaty, on the purchase and sale of energy, until Brazil clarifies the case.

In a statement, the Brazilian government stated that the operation had been authorized in June 2022 under the Jair Bolsonaro government, but was left without effect as soon as the current administration became aware of the case.
