The mayor of the Paraguayan city, Pedro Juan Caballero, an area considered a drug trafficking route on the border with Brazil, died on Saturday night (21), five days after being attacked in the street, his family said.
At least three assailants shot Mayor José Carlos Acevedo on Tuesday (17) as he was leaving a meeting at a community headquarters in the city, about 360 kilometers north of Asunción, ahead of the Brazilian city of Ponta Porã (MS). ), according to statements made to the local press.
Acevedo spent the last few days hospitalized at a clinic in the city. Doctors said he was shot seven times and was in critical condition until he died.
The brother of the mayor and governor of the province of Amambay, whose capital is Pedro Juan Caballero, blamed the government of President Mario Abdo for the attack and the lack of security in the region.
