Fernando Gabriel It is Aline Gabriel parents of a 7-year-old child, used social media this week to denounce that their son has faced racism since the beginning of the school year.
According to the couple, the young man has suffered isolation and structural racism at the school he studies at, Fundação Instituto Tecnológico de Osasco, located in Jardim das Flores, in Osasco (SP).
The child is in the first grade of elementary school and is the only black student in the classroom, according to the parents’ report. The father claims that since his son started school, he has been dealing with situations of isolation from teachers and other students.
In the report published on the networks, Fernando explained that, in his son’s diary, the teacher constantly claimed that the boy had psychological and cognitive problems.
After the teacher’s messages, Fernando hired a behavioral psychologist to monitor the boy at school. On the first day, the hired professional would have witnessed the isolation suffered by the child, promoted by educators and other students.
“All the games that existed, my son was always isolated. My eldest son also always saw him isolated at school, alone in the courtyard. The students excluded people, and the teacher also didn’t do any inclusion work,” said the father.
After monitoring, the psychologist issued a report stating that the child did not have any psychological problems and that, in reality, she would simply be excluded from the rest of the class.
Damage caused
The child’s mother, still in testimony, said that the child, after starting studies at the school, began to ask questions about the color of her skin all the time. The boy also says he no longer wants to study at a “white” school.
“My son’s self-esteem today doesn’t exist, my son today feels neglected in everything, he questions himself about his color. He says he doesn’t want to go to a white school because no white people like him,” the mother shared.
Fernando, the father, states that the school does not have any type of preparation to take care of black children in the first grade. The couple reported that they held a meeting with the school management.
Pedro’s parents stated, in a note, that they are taking the necessary measures with the public authorities. The couple also says they will do everything in their power so that those who, directly or indirectly, allowed the situation and neglected structural racism can be duly held accountable.
What those responsible say
In a statement, the Fundação Instituto Tecnológico de Osasco reported that it had contacted the student’s family and was investigating what had happened. The unit also repudiated the reported case of racism.
“The Foundation strongly repudiates any act of racism or discriminatory conduct in our school, and reinforces its commitment to rigorously combat any suspicion or indication of this type of conduct”, says the note.
The mayor of Osasco, Rogério Lins, also spoke about the case. He reported, through his social networks, that he was at the family home last Sunday (12) to understand what happened to the child.
“I was at the house of the couple Fernando and Aline, I had the opportunity to talk to them, their family and I made our entire government available to carry out the necessary investigation and take the appropriate measures”, stated the mayor.
The Osasco Department of Education spoke out stating that the teacher and coordinator reported had already been removed. The Secretariat also claimed not to condone exclusionary behavior.
