The father and mother of a 9-year-old girl who was found dead in a garbage container in Guaíba, Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, were indicted by the police after receiving an expert report.
The body of Kerollyn Souza Ferreira was found on August 9 by a recycler, who called the Military Police and the local school. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) was called to the scene and confirmed the girl’s death.
Experts were called to the scene and found no apparent signs of violence on the body, which led the police to suspect that the cause of death may be related to the ingestion of some type of substance.
Subsequently, the Expert Report did not determine the cause of death, but confirmed the presence of Clonazepam, a medication that treats psychiatric disorders, in the victim’s body.
In a statement to the police, Kerollyn’s mother confessed to having self-medicated and medicated her daughter hours before the girl was found dead.
Based on the report, the Civil Police indicted the mother for mistreatment resulting in death and psychological violence. The victim’s father is being indicted for material abandonment and psychological violence.
THE CNN contacted the defense attorneys representing the parents, Carla Carolina Abreu de Souza and Matheus Lacerda Ferreira.
The mother’s defense stated that “the indictment makes it clear that she has no direct connection with the death.”
According to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Rio Grande do Sul, the case is being “investigated by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Guaíba to subsequently file a complaint or not or even request further investigation.”
