Parents should be a “safe haven” for their children, says creator of Mothers for Diversity

Maju Giorgi’s son was only 5 years old when she and her husband realized that the child was homosexual. Certainty, however, only came in adolescence.

“When he was 14, I realized he was very depressed. One day, he hugged me and said ‘Mom, I’m gay’. He was desperate”, told Maju in an interview with CNN Radio this Wednesday (4), in the frame “CNN no Plural “.

It was then that the idea of creating a non-governmental organization arose to welcome fathers and mothers whose children are homosexual.

The Mothers for Diversity collective was created in 2014. According to Giorgi, who is currently the NGO’s coordinator, parents who seek the institution will find “reception, pro bono therapy, psychiatrist, and, later, information”, she said. “Information is what destroys prejudice.”

For Maju Giorgi, parents need to be the “safe haven” for their children. “LGBTQIA+ children have a predetermined destiny, a cycle of violence everywhere: at school, in the job market, on the street. But often the first place of violence is the home itself. So, we encourage parents to be the first place of reception”, she said.

“We are united by the fear of violence, the brutality of the lack of rights and by a feeling of injustice that overflows. We would like to understand why [os homossexuais são vítimas de violência]. They are innocent,” she declared.
