Parintins 2022: folk festival is back after two years of pandemic

An island in the middle of amazon taken by the blue and red colors that divide passions. so is the Parintins Festival cultural heritage of Brazil, which is back after two long years of waiting.

The stage for this great folkloric celebration is the Bumbodromo, which, seen from above, resembles the shape of an ox head. The festival mixes indigenous influences with the legend of father Francisco and mother Catirina – two slaves on a farm – and also the São João festival.

The crowds do not mix and 21 items are judged by the jurors. Everything is prepared in secrecy and is only revealed during the three nights of presentations, which this year promise to thrill.

This year’s champion should only be known on Monday (27), when the scores will be revealed.

The capricious ox, represented by the color blue and whose symbol is the star, will bring the theme “Amazon, our struggle in poetry”.

While “Red People’s Amazon” was the theme chosen by Boi Garantido, in red and with a heart as a symbol.

This year, those who travel around the island of Parintins will see that the visual arts have taken to the streets. Several works of painting are scattered around the city as in an open-air gallery.

But the main one is on the facade of the Bumbodromo: a giant mural with almost 800 square meters, entitled “Victory of Popular Culture” and signed by two young people from Parintina, Alziney Pereira and Kemerson Freitas.

According to the Tourism Department, around 80,000 people are expected to attend the festival, 15% more than the last edition. This year’s tickets are sold out and hotels are fully booked.

For the city, whose economy is almost entirely based on this party, the moment is for recovery, as in 2020 and 2021 the event had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Covid-19 . The expectation of the city government is that R$ 100 million will be injected into the economy.

beyond the festival

It is impossible to come to Parintins and not be enchanted by the tricycles that are everywhere. This unusual means of transport is already a symbol of the festival, so much so that the city’s tricycles are cultural and intangible heritage of the state of Amazonas.

The activity is regulated through associations that have more than 350 associated workers, thus allowing security for visitors who choose them as a means of transport.

During the Parintins Folklore Festival, tricycle riders offer a City Tour with a special itinerary that passes through the main tourist attractions of the island.

The Indigenous Handicraft Fair is also a sure stop for those who disembark on the island.

Earrings, necklaces, garments and decorative objects made by indigenous artisans of different ethnicities attract tourists from all over Brazil and other countries.

The fair is held in partnership with the Sateré-Mawé Indigenous Association of Rio Andirá (Aisma), the Cultural Association of Indigenous Artisans of Parintins (Aindi) and has the participation of more than 60 artisans.

The project has as main objectives the strengthening of the indigenous entrepreneur and the propagation of the Amazonian culture.
