Paris 2024: “Alibi”, by Pabllo Vittar, becomes Rosamaria’s anthem in women’s volleyball

Opposite Rosamaria, from the women’s volleyball team, has been given a song to call her own during the matches at the Paris Olympic Games. Whenever she prepares to serve or scores points, the DJ responsible for livening up the games arena plays “Alibi” by Brazilian drag queen Pabllo Vittar.

The song, made in collaboration with Iranian Sevdaliza and French Yseult, was chosen by DJ Stari, a well-known figure in international volleyball competitions, because of a part that mentions the player’s name: “Rosa, que linda eres”. The song went viral on social media precisely because of this part, which uses a sample of a traditional Colombian song (“Rosa”, by Totó La Momposina) to compose its chorus.

DJ Stari had already won over fans at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics when he performed an extensive repertoire of Brazilian songs during the men’s and women’s volleyball teams’ games. In Paris, things are no different.

“Alibi” makes Pabllo Vittar the first Brazilian drag queen — and the third in history — to have a song on the Billboard Hot 100, the main music chart in the United States. The song ranked 95th in the ranking compiled by Luminate, which combines physical sales and streaming to determine the most listened to song in the United States that week.

Before her, only RuPaul (with “Supermodel (You Better Work)”, “Snapshot” and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” with Elton John) and Chappell Roan (with “Pink Pony Club”, “Femininomenon”, “Casual”, “Red Wine Supernova”, “Hot to Go!” and “Good Luck, Babe!”) achieved the feat.

“Alibi” also made Pabllo Vittar the first Brazilian drag queen to enter Spotify’s global top 50 and hold the third highest peak for a Brazilian artist on the platform, behind only Anitta, who reached the top with “Envolver” and eighth place with “Bellakeo”, in collaboration with Peso Pluma.
