The big European capitals like Rome, Paris, London or Dublin can make tourists dream… but not expatriates. According to a survey conducted by the expatriate social network InterNations (based in Munich, Germany), and spotted by International mail and Bloomberg, the favorite cities of those who have chosen to leave their country are located above all in the Iberian Peninsula. Indeed, Valencia (Spain), Alicante (Spain) and Lisbon (Portugal) form the podium. In the top 10, we also find Malaga (in sixth place) and Madrid (in ninth place), alongside Panama City, Singapore and Buenos Aires (Argentina).
What do expatriates like in these Iberian cities? For Valencia, it’s the local health system and the climate, says InterNations. In Alicante, 4 out of 5 expats feel at home. As for Lisbon, none of the survey respondents found anything to complain about regarding their personal safety when in this city.
Paris, city of expensive accommodation
On the other hand, Paris is classified at the 61e place, in a ranking of 66 cities. For the French capital, it is the property prices which are notably responsible for this bad rating. InterNations founder and co-CEO, Malte Zeeck, tells Bloomberg that “expats in big cities like New York, Tokyo, Paris, Hong Kong or London have difficulty finding affordable accommodation and are generally dissatisfied with their financial situation. “. He adds that they are also “dissatisfied with their work-life balance” when they live in these cities.
Finally, another complaint against Paris: the language. Indeed, InterNations indicates that expatriates who take up residence in Paris, but also in Dublin, encounter difficulties in living in these two cities without having sufficient skills in the languages spoken locally. More than 15,000 expatriates responded to the survey, representing 173 nationalities and living in 181 countries or territories. Carried out in March 2020, the survey does not take into account the effects of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
