Paris Opening Ceremony DJ Receives Death Threats, Speaks Out

The DJ Barbara Butch who performed during the parade held at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics told her followers that she is receiving death threats. After saying she was honored for the great opportunity at the sporting event, the French artist lamented the attacks.

“I was incredibly honored to be a featured artist at the Paris 2024 opening ceremony and to share my vision for the party. My heart is still full of joy and I am grateful for all the love and support you have given me since then,” she began her post.

“As you know, my commitment has always been to make everyone dance and, in my own way, to make a nation on the dance floor. Through my work as a DJ and my activism, I have always promoted love and inclusion — to me, that is what will save the world, even when it is falling apart,” he continued.

Barbara then decided to report the attacks and threats she has received since her presentation last Friday (26). “Today, however, I am the target of yet another cyber harassment — particularly violent. Although at first I decided not to speak openly to let the enemies calm down, the messages I receive are increasingly extreme.”

“All because I had the honor of representing the diversity of my country through art and music, alongside other artists and performers that I admire. Whatever anyone says, I exist. I have never been ashamed of who I am and I take responsibility for everything – including my artistic choices.”

“All my life I have refused to be a victim: I will not shut up. I am not afraid of those who hide behind a screen, or a pseudonym, to spew their hatred and frustrations. I will fight them without ever trembling. I am committed and proud. Proud of who I am, of what I am and of what I embody, both for my loved ones and for millions of French people. My France is France!” concluded the DJ.

Last weekend, Thomas Jolly artistic director of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, denied that the scene with the drag queens presented during the ceremony was inspired by the painting “The Last Supper”, by Leonardo Da Vinci. This is because the moment generated controversy between the Catholic Church and the far right in France, as pointed out by Reuters.

“The Last Supper? That wasn’t my inspiration. Dionysus arrives at this table. Why is he there? Because he is the god of feasting, of wine, and the father of Sequana, a goddess linked to the river. The idea was to have a great pagan feast linked to the gods of Olympus,” he said.
