Park on the edge of the Guarapiranga dam has 261 bird species

Study published in the Journal of the Forest Institute identified the presence of 261 bird species in the Nove de Julho Linear Park (PLNJ), a municipal green area located in the Guarapiranga dam, south of the state capital. The data were released last week.

Of the park’s total birds, 14 are endemic from the Atlantic Forest, eight are threatened with extinction and 30 are migratory, of which 18 of the northern hemisphere origin.

For the elaboration of the study, data from scientific research and citizen science were compiled for a period of 24 years.

“PLNJ is a great example of how the remaining areas of floodplain in the municipality of São Paulo and the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, extremely threatened by irregular urban occupation and pollution, need to be preserved in the form of municipal and state green areas,” the study says.

The researchers point to the possibility of using the area for scientific research, educational and leisure activities for the community, including the practice of bird observation.

According to the study, the potential of the park for conservation and bird observation is high and demands its effectiveness as an urban park.

Among the necessary actions cited by the researchers are investments in infrastructure; Implementation of physical headquarters, with basic structures for employees and visitors; Creation of permanent inventory programs and fauna monitoring; territorial demarcation and effective management plan.

In addition, they recommend expanding the sanitation of the Rio das Pedras stream micro-basin and the effective operation of ecobarreiras to reduce solid waste thrown into the dam and the park.

The PLNJ was defined by the study as one of the most important areas for floodplain birds and wet fields of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region.

“[É] A stop and rest point of migratory species, besides presenting birds that perform regional and vacant movements. It is also of great importance for forest birds, whether residents, migrants, partial migrants, winter visitors or who are passing through the region, ”the researchers say.
