Parliament: Behind closed doors, the hearing of Them. Demiri for the post of EYP commander

The meeting of the Institutions and Transparency Committee for the hearing and formulation of an opinion on the appointment of Themistocles Demiris as the new commander of the National Intelligence Service began with the confidentiality procedure provided for by the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament.

Minister of State Giorgos Gerapetritis is present at the meeting on behalf of the government.

The hearing of Mr. Demiris by the Committee on Institutions and Transparency is confidential, based on article 43A of the Civil Code which provides that “discussions on the activity of the EYP are confidential and the members of parliament – members of the Committee undertake to maintain this confidentiality thereafter the end of their term”. This means that minutes of the meeting are kept, but they are not distributed. Committee members, MPs and parties have access to them, but only to read and take notes and not to receive copies.

The ambassador and former secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Themistocles Demiris was born in Athens. He studied Political Science at Panteion University and has a master’s degree in Middle Eastern Politics at the Institute of Mediterranean and Arab Studies. In the period 1978-1981 he worked as a journalist (external associate) in the review “Political Issues” and as an editorial director in the magazines “Computer Age”, “Plant”, “Equip”, “Agrotiki Periosia” In 1981 he entered the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was sworn in as a Diplomatic Attache in 1982. Until 1984, he worked as an Attache and Secretary III in the Cryptographic Service and the Middle East and Africa Directorate.

In 1985 he was assigned to the Greek Embassy in Baghdad. In 1989 he was transferred to the Permanent Delegation of Greece to UNESCO.

In 1992 he returned to the Central Service, being assigned to the Turkey-Cyprus Directorate, taking over, in 1994, as head of the Cyprus department. From 1996 he served at the Greek Embassy in Nicosia, as Counselor A’ and Deputy Head of Authority / Chargé d’Affaires.

In 2001 he was transferred to the Permanent Representation of Greece in the EU. assuming, successively, the duties of representative in the Western Balkans Group and the direction of the External Relations department of the Delegation. He returned in 2006 to the Central Service, taking over as director of the Directorate of European External Relations and being promoted in 2007 to Minister Plenipotentiary B.

In September 2008, he was assigned to Brussels as Permanent Representative to the Western European Union and Ambassador to the EU. with the duties of Representative of Greece in the Political and Security Committee.

In 2013 he was appointed as Ambassador of Greece to Italy and San Marino and as Permanent Representative to the World Food Organization (FAO) and the other International Organizations based in Rome.

In 2014, he was promoted to Minister Plenipotentiary A. In May 2017 he returned to Athens and assumed the position of Director in the Directorate of International Financial Organizations until 1.1.2018. He has been decorated by the Presidents of Egypt, Cyprus, Italy and the Hellenic Republic. He speaks and writes Greek, English, French and Italian. He is married and the father of two children.
