The details of the contracts for the lease of the Air Tractors, the technical specifications that accompany them, as well as the detailed technical characteristics of the aircraft in question, as provided by the manufacturing company, are requested by 43 SYRIZA MPs, with a question and a request to submit documents to the ministers of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and Citizen Protection, headed by Christos Spirtzis.
With wildfires raging in many parts of the country, causing ecological havoc and human suffering, reports are labeling Air Tractors as “coal the treasure”, MPs say, adding that the much-hyped Air Tractors are proving unable to fly on air, while they cannot draw water from the sea, when the waves exceed 40 points.
“The specific aircraft were made to take water from lakes, which as is known the country does not have – except in very few cases – and mainly the areas that are usually affected by fires. Nevertheless, it is reported that twelve (12) with floats were rented from Australia , which necessarily fly in pairs, one single-seater and one two-seater, in order for the two-seater to also fly a liaison. These aircraft cannot communicate directly with the coordinating body of the fire department during the fire, because they do not carry a second radio, such as they bring all the other means”, the MPs note and add that only five were rented from Spain with a direct award without tender and an unknown method of payment, while “it is leaking that the government plans to buy 36 such aircraft for forest firefighting”.
The relevant ministers are asked to answer whether the reports and objections raised by the journalistic investigation regarding the technical characteristics and operational capabilities of the Air Tractor type aircraft are true.
At the same time, the SYRIZA-PS MPs are asking for answers regarding the limit of wind gusts within which (limit) the Air Tractors can fly and operate and whether they can take water in case of waves of more than 40 centimeters.
