Parliament: SYRIZA ‘democratic way out’ amendments on education issues

Four amendments regulating education issues were tabled by the SYRIZA MPs headed by Nikos Filis and Meropis Tzoufis, Head of Department and Deputy Head of Education, respectively. The provisions proposed by the MPs of the official opposition are characterized as “amendments of a democratic way out” and concern:

-the abolition of the Minimum Admission Base, the “punitive and socially unjust measure of the government of ND, which led to the unprecedented reduction of the number of students admitted to universities, in the academic year 2021-2022, by at least 20,000” and which “in combination with other measures the outflow of students from the Lyceum, such as the Theme Bank, the channeling of students to underage work, leads Greece to deviate from the European target for a percentage of higher education graduates in 45% of young people aged 25-34 by 2030 ” .

– The abolition of the Theme Bank in all classes (A, B, C) of each type of Lyceum as a “pedagogically untested and ineffective practice”.

– The reduction of the exam material for the year 2022 for the courses that are examined nationwide for the admission to the Higher Education of GEL and EPAL graduates due to the serious problems caused by the pandemic, given the problems due to the pandemic they faced in both previous schools students of this year’s GYLikeio, and while from time to time a mandatory closure of schools was imposed.

The abolition of the reduction of the regular grant to HEIs by twenty percent (20%) based on subjective criteria, on the grounds that “the abolition of this regulation is in line with the basic principle that the regular grant of HEIs is a constitutional obligation of the state and is considered necessary to ensure the smooth operation of public universities “.

“The amendments of SYRIZA-PS were submitted on the same day that the Minister of Education undertakes a new challenge to the detriment of the Universities. With an amendment she submitted to an irrelevant bill, as usual Minister of Education forbids the rector’s authorities to call elections, while their term expires on August 31, 2022, and they had to do so immediately. “Its goal is to hold elections with a new system, which remains unclear and hidden”, SYRIZA states and complains that “this is a recipe for upsetting the universities” as “behind the provision is the intention of the government to restore the Boards of Directors, despite the opposition of academics and students and despite the dissolving experience from the previous application of this system “.

“Of course, the amendment – which is being tabled abruptly and at the last minute – has not been discussed in the Committee on Educational Affairs. ‘ .
