The bill of the Ministry of Justice, “Amendments to the Criminal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure and other urgent provisions” was passed by a majority of the Plenary Session of the Parliament.
Only the deputies of ND and the deputy of KIN.AL, Andreas Loverdos voted in favor of the principle of the bill. All the opposition parties voted against, except for KIN.AL which voted “present”.
However, several articles of the bill that tighten penalties for certain heinous crimes, such as sex crimes and homicides, were passed by a large majority.
It is worth noting that immediately after the end of the electronic voting, there was confusion regarding the KIN.AL vote, as he appeared to vote “Yes” in the beginning, while it was clarified in the Plenary that his official position is “Present”. A little later it was clarified that, “inadvertently”, the special speaker of the party, George Moulkiotis, who replaced Ahmet Ilhan in the Plenary today, had pressed the wrong button and instead of “Present” voted “Yes”, in the beginning. The issue ended after the clarifications given to the competent service of the Parliament, both by him and by the parliamentary representative of KIN.AL, Costas Skandalidis.
