Part of inflation is a consequence of international movement, says XP economist

The chief economist at XP Investimentos, Caio Megale, analyzed, this Tuesday (11), in an interview with CNN, that inflation of 10.06% in 2021, has as one of the responsible the international movement that influenced its rise.

“Much of the rise in inflation is really an international movement. If you compare inflation in Brazil and in countries like Mexico, the United States and Germany, which historically do not have inflation going together, from the beginning to the end of last year, all these countries had a good acceleration”, explained Caio.

“Much because the measures to combat Covid-19 in the world, both in terms of stipulating demand and closing international trade, those restrictions that were important and necessary, but that caused supply problems, led to an increase in global costs. , and therefore to an increase in inflation,” he continued.

The result was above the ceiling of the target established by the National Monetary Council (CMN), of 5.25%, the highest in six years. For Megale, the depreciation of the Real was also one of the factors that contributed to the number.

“International inflation came to Brazil boosted by the accelerated depreciation of the Real. Many currencies depreciated at the beginning of the pandemic, but they returned as the economy normalized. But not the Real. It went from US$ 4 before the pandemic, jumped to US$ 5.70, became very volatile but did not return to levels close to pre-pandemic”, he concluded.
