The European Union ambassador to Brazil, Ignacio Ybañez, spoke this Thursday (24th), in an interview with CNNon the importance of Brazil in the face of the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, since the country is now part of the Security Council of the United Nations.
“Brazil is a well-established democracy, which has always defended the charter and now has the immense responsibility of sitting on the Security Council. We logically want to count on Brazil to demonstrate to Russia that not everything can be done in the international community, that there are rules and rules that must be respected in the international community,” the ambassador told CNN.
In January of this year, Brazil assumed its 11th term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations. The country was elected with 9 other nations to set up the rotating part of the Council for the next two years. In July this year, Brazil will assume the presidency.
In a note released in January, the Itamaraty said that the country will prioritize “the prevention and peaceful solution of conflicts, the efficiency of peace missions and humanitarian responses to international crises”.
THE CNNthe ambassador said that he met with European Union leaders to discuss measures and sanctions to be adopted against Russia after its invasion of Ukrainian territory on Thursday morning (24).
“European Union leaders created a council and clearly condemned the practice of a country in not respecting such a basic element of the United Nations charter, such as respect for sovereignty,” said Ybañez.
The ambassador highlighted the sanctions to be applied to Russia, reiterating that initially the countries tried to reach agreements through diplomatic channels, which did not work, as he explained to CNN.
“We are going to take measures in the financial, energy, transport and visa sectors. The first effort that member states made is to try to leave open the path of diplomacy, it did not work, so we will take measures that will be tough for us, but will be much tougher for Russia.”
