The Council today adopted a decision suspending part of the implementation of the EU-Belarus visa facilitation agreement. This decision is a response to the ongoing hybrid attack launched by the Belarussian regime.
The suspension covers the provisions exempting them from the requirements for proof of documents, regulating the issuance of multiple-entry visas and reducing visa application fees, as they apply to officials of the Belarussian regime. This decision will not affect ordinary citizens of Belarus, who will continue to enjoy the same benefits under the visa facilitation agreement they currently enjoy.
On September 29, the Commission proposed measures against the Lukashenko regime in response to the instrumentalization of people for political purposes.
The decision was in response to the Belarussian regime’s efforts to destabilize the EU and its Member States by facilitating illegal immigration for political purposes, following the decision of 28 June to suspend of the EU-Belarus readmission agreement. At the same time, he had pointed out that it concerns specific categories of people who are related to the regime.
