Participation of Chr. Stylianidis at the 2nd meeting of the Cyprus Initiative for Climate Change in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East

The adoption of a Regional Action Plan (Regional Action Plan) to launch specific medium-long-term initiatives to address the overall impact of climate change in the wider region, was the focus of the 2nd meeting of ministers in the framework. The meeting taking place in Cyprus was attended by the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Christos Stylianidis. Apart from Cyprus and Greece, Egypt, Italy, Jordan, Israel, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Bahrain, Oman, Palestine, as well as the EU, France, the USA, UK and Australia as observers.

In his speech, the Minister welcomed the initiative of the Government of Cyprus and stressed that the next Climate Summit to be held in Cairo (COP 27) is an excellent opportunity for the countries of the region to jointly promote their positions and their proposals, as well as the concrete results of their efforts to reduce the impact on climate change. He also stressed the need for all efforts undertaken under the Regional Action Plan to be in line with the objectives set within the EU, in particular through the European Green Deal (EU Green Deal).

Issues of strengthening cooperation to reduce the effects of the climate crisis were also discussed, with an emphasis on synergies between the scientific communities of the 3 + 1 countries.

More specifically, the representatives of the four countries decided to utilize the work that has already been done in the framework of the Cyprus Initiative for Climate Change. In addition, they decided to set up a technical committee of experts from their countries, with the aim of submitting suggestions on the roadmap to be followed, with specific objectives, on the issue of climate action.

It is noted that the ministerial meeting is an initiative of the Government of Cyprus as early as March 2019, which brings together countries in the region and in cooperation with transnational bodies and organizations, as well as experts, aims to develop proposals and measures to address effects of climate change. The first ministerial meeting was held in February 2022 via teleconference.

The objectives of the initiative are to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement and national plans for mitigating the effects of climate change, to adopt specific action plans in different areas related to the economy and society, and to explore specific techno-economic scenarios for the mitigating the effects of climate change in the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.

On the sidelines of the work, the first ministerial meeting was held within the framework of the 3 + 1 scheme (Greece, Cyprus, Israel + USA), on the subject of climate action and the participation of Minister Stylianidis, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus , Costa Kady, the Minister of Environment of Israel, Tamar Zadberg, the head of the International Relations Office of the US Environmental Protection Agency, Mark Kasman, as well as the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Judith Garber.
