A joint initiative between the Environmental Police and a university in the interior of São Paulo is providing a new chance of life for wounded and endangered wild animals. The Veterinary Hospital of the University of Fernandópolis has become a refuge for these creatures, offering specialized care and the possibility of return to nature after recovery.
In recent months, the hospital has met a significant number of cases, including 33 macaws, known for its colorful plumage and characteristic vocalization. Between October 2024 and January this year, a total of 58 wild animals received treatment, most of them birds, as well as some mammals.

Fighting Trafficking and Maus-Tratos
The university’s strategic location, near the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, contributes to the high number of rescues related to animal trafficking. Many patients are victims of inspections that identify abuse or illegal transport situations.
Junior Soares project coordinator explains: “We have several animals that arrived for care, victims of environmental police inspection, whether by mistreatment, trafficking or inadequate creation under human care”.
Positive impact and learning
Prior to this initiative, rescued animals were sent to distant places, up to 200 kilometers. Now, according to the project coordinator, with local service, the chance of a successful recovery has increased significantly, contributing to the preservation of biodiversity and environmental conservation in the region. “The animals have a second chance. The vast majority ended up dying by the highway.”
The partnership between the Environmental Police and the university not only benefits animals, but also provides a valuable learning experience for students. “The project serves 100% of wild animals. This impact is very important. The university is also contributing to the learning of students, offering notions of management and ecological importance,” says the coordinator.
