Parts of India prepare for lockdown relief despite 2,677 deaths in one day

THE India recorded 114,460 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the lowest number in two months, while the death toll from COVID-19 increased by 2,677 as parts of the country prepared to ease travel restrictions.

India has the second highest number of new coronavirus cases in the world after the United States, as to date it has recorded a total of 28.8 million, according to data from the country’s Ministry of Health, which were released today.

Also, The death toll from the pandemic in India has risen to 346,759 in the past 24 hours.

A second wave of the new coronavirus, which has hit the country’s rural areas hard, has not yet subsided, but New Delhi and other cities are preparing to allow more businesses to operate and ease travel restrictions from Monday.

The western state of Maharashtra, which is India’s richest and had the highest number of cases during the second wave, plans to begin this week a relaxation in stages of the severe lockdown that it had imposed in April.

Scientists have warned that a third wave of the new coronavirus could hit India later this year, possibly having a greater impact on children.

Although the country has accelerated its citizens’ COVID-19 vaccination campaign in the past few weeks after a slow start, the majority of its 1.3 billion people are expected not to have been vaccinated by the time a third wave.
