Party conferences end – Running for elections with revival of scenarios for autumn ballots

By Niki Zorba

Three conferences in less than a month: ND, SYRIZA and PASOK-KINAL yesterday, completed their conference procedures and are officially thrown into the election battle.

We are in a pre-election period anyway, because both the ruling party, the official opposition and the minority recognize in practice, regardless of the time when the ballot box will be set up. The scenarios for elections in the autumn, after all, have been “flashing” for six months, keeping the party machines “warm”, inevitably.

Ecology and aggregation

At stake is the return of normalcy and stability that only an autonomous government can ensure in the midst of unprecedented liquidity and challenges, SYRIZA says, “political change is needed” with a progressive government to return the social sign in government policies, with peaks and for fiscal derailment and PASOK-KINAL, just yesterday reaffirmed at its conference that the bet is the implementation of a social democratic plan with the return of the party to high percentages, maintaining its political autonomy and “no” to K. Mitsotaki and A. Tsipras.

It had recently marked the “end” of the election alarm (at the level of scenarios, of course) after repeated assurances by the Prime Minister (in his public speeches but also addressed to his ministers) that the elections will take place in the Spring of ’23. Last week, however, the “election drama” erupted again after leaks and reports that the elections will take place on the first Sunday of October and the obvious goal is to send the message in any case that the scenario of the autumn elections has not “burned” and that the prime minister -although the government wants to exhaust its government term- it has not finally rejected the relevant suggestions it accepts.

In the equation the economy

The variable “economy” is certainly not missing from this whole equation. The summer tourist season is expected to be sweeping, which means money in state coffers. This is one aspect, the absolutely positive one, that justifies the search for an “electoral window” by the ruling party. But there is the other side, the twisted one: The difficulties are ahead, since (and) the war in Ukraine is not expected to end, and therefore neither are its allies, raising the level of challenges.

The recent message of the Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni that Greece and other countries with high debt should be especially careful Nationally funded support measures contribute to the assessment of tight budget margins for mitigation measures.

Given all this (and given that in reality the elections will not be so “early” if they are actually held in the fall), the ND MPs have already thrown themselves into the election race. Alexis Tsipras asks for them at every opportunity and PASOK-KINAL through its president, also recently made a relevant request with a peak, the resources of the Recovery Fund.

The political time is dense, but enough to slow down – to rekindle a few more election scenarios. What is certain is that polarization brings political gains, especially to the two big ones, with the dominant grouping.
