Passenger who died in Singapore Airlines flight turbulence was British

The person who died on board the Singapore Airlines plane that faced severe turbulence on a flight from London to Singapore was a 73-year-old British man, the general manager of Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport said on Tuesday (21).

According to Kittipong Kittikachorn, the man died on the plane.

Kittikachorn told CNN that the cause of death is yet to be determined by a doctor, adding that the man had a heart problem.

“This is the first time in Thailand that turbulence has caused loss of life,” Kittikachorn said, adding that the wife of the deceased passenger is in hospital.

The UK's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said it was reviewing the reports when requested by the CNN to comment.

According to the company, 30 people were injured. Meanwhile, Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital in Bangkok, which received the injured passengers, said at least 71 people were injured, six of them seriously.

“We can confirm that there are several injuries and one death on board the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft,” the airline said in a statement on Facebook.

“As of 7:50 pm Singapore time on May 21, 2024, 18 people have been admitted to hospital. Another 12 are being treated in hospitals,” according to Singapore Airlines.

“The remaining passengers and crew are being examined and treated, where necessary, at Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok,” the company said in its post.

The Boeing 777-300ER plane with 211 passengers and 18 crew was heading to Singapore when it made the emergency landing, the airline said in a statement.

A spokesman for Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport said medical staff were on standby.

“Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to passengers and crew on board the aircraft,” the airline said. “We are working with local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance.”
