Passengers evacuated from plane in Panama bound for the US after false alarm caused by diaper

A Copa Airlines plane bound for Tampa, Florida, that had taken off from Panama City had to return after a suspected bomb threat, and the 144 passengers on board had to disembark, but the scare ended up being dismissed as a false alarm. , authorities said on Friday.

Authorities carried out an emergency inspection of the aircraft and identified a disposable adult diaper as the object that caused the scare, police in the Central American country reported on a social network.

The Boeing 737-800 aircraft was isolated from other planes when it landed back at Panama City’s international airport following the suspected bomb scare, Panama’s aviation agency said.

Passengers reboarded the aircraft to resume their journey to Tampa, Copa Airlines said in a later statement, adding that authorities had ruled out any type of threat.

Panama City’s international airport, where 17 commercial airlines operate, did not respond to requests for comment.
