Ten years after the passage of Queen Elizabeth II to Brazil, her son, Charles III, visited the country in 1978, where he visited Brasília and Rio de Janeiro. Among the activities, the monarch participated in a polo match in the federal capital.
Passionate about polo, the then prince played a game in Brasília representing The Household Cavalry (the Queen’s Cavalry Regiment) which is a confrere of the 1st Guards Cavalry Regiment – Dragons of Independence.
Charles’ team beat the team coordinated by General Paiva Chaves, who was captain at the time.
At the pole, the two nations have a strong bond. And along with the Vatican’s Swiss Guard, they are considered the most famous honors troops in the world.
The barracks of the Dragons of Independence, in Brasília, has three polo fields. The avenue that lies between the two main fields has been renamed “Prince Charles Avenue”.
King Charles III
The eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II, the now called King Charles III, assumed the English throne after his mother’s death on Thursday (8). However, the coronation follows a series of protocols and usually takes place months after his accession, and can take up to a year.
Charles will be crowned Britain’s oldest king at age 73.
The international press, on several occasions, went so far as to say that Charles could abdicate the position of this succession, to leave it in the hands of his son William, who is 40 years old.
In repercussions surrounding the death of Queen Elizabeth, the Vice President of Content at CNN journalist Américo Martins, commented that he thought the abdication of the throne was unlikely.
“I think it’s unlikely that he’ll resign, he’s prepared his whole life, he wants this job, I think it’s much more likely that he’ll make a kind of transition for his son,” he said.
