Paths to the Inclusion of LGBT People

In recent years, we have witnessed significant advances in the fight for the inclusion of LGBTI+ people in various spheres of society. However, it is important to recognize that, even amid these achievements, discrimination persists in different spaces, including the job market, families, politics and sports. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the inclusion of LGBTI+ people in different areas is a continuous process that requires everyone’s attention so that there is no setback in the spaces that have been achieved so far.
To promote the inclusion of LGBTI+ people in different spaces of society, it is essential to adopt a comprehensive and transformative approach in any area of social interaction, whether at home, in schools or in the job market. This includes implementing inclusive policies that respect diversity, along with promoting educational programs to raise awareness among community members and leaders about LGBTI+ issues. Furthermore, the creation of support networks and groups can contribute to establishing welcoming environments in different contexts, allowing LGBTI+ people the possibility of thriving in their jobs, studies or in any area in which they are present.

ADVANCE IN POLITICAL SPHERES

The inclusion of the LGBTI+ community in politics is a fundamental process to ensure that all voices are heard and represented. It is essential that politics is an inclusive space, where LGBTI+ candidates and representatives have the opportunity to actively participate and influence decisions that affect their lives and communities.

In Brazilian politics, the presence of the LGBTI+ community is still low, but it has gradually advanced. In the last elections, we saw an increase in this representation in state and federal legislative chambers. ¹In 2022, 18 openly LGBTI+ parliamentarians were elected, a number twice as high as in the previous election. However, in the Senate, no LGBTI+ person was elected in this last election.

With the increase in this representation, the LGBTI+ community can have more strength to demand and advance some important issues. ²The most recent were the changes proposed for the new ID document, which will no longer contain a distinction between social name and civil registration name, in addition to the absence of information about gender. This was a request made by the Ministry of Human Rights, seeking to make the document more inclusive.

INCLUSION IN SPORTS

In the world of sport, one of the sectors traditionally marked by stereotypes of masculinity and homophobia, organized fan movements are promoting historic changes.

An example of this is the frequent presence of these movements in the main stadiums in Brazil. LGBTI+ fans from major Brazilian clubs like Corinthians (@fielLGBT) and Palmeiras (@oporcoiris), for example, are gaining their place at football games and their simple existence has a huge impact on spreading respect in an environment that is still hostile to the LGBTI+ community.

The increase in LGBTI+ groups in the stands contributes to the creation of a less toxic environment and more prone to diversity, benefiting both fans and professional athletes. This representation is essential to encourage more people to play sports and to allow LGBTI+ athletes to feel safer and more welcomed to openly declare their sexual orientation, as is already the case in women’s football.

The inclusion of LGBTI+ people in different spaces of society is an issue that should always be given due emphasis. Little by little, the fight for equality and representation is transforming sport, politics, families and the job market as a whole. But while challenges persist, the message is clear: diversity is essential to create more inclusive and respectful spaces in different sectors of society.
